They see my skin, a shade of night
They hear my screams as I take flight
They see my eyes, I look away
Why would you make me feel this way?
“He misbehaves”…
“He’s acting out”…
They assume they know what I’m about
They stop and stare, they whisper low
About the things they do not know
But what they miss behind the glance
Is how my brain begins to dance
I try and process the steady beat
But I can’t focus, it’s bittersweet
My senses sing a symphony
Textures and sounds, they converse with me
And when I flap, or spin, or sway
For me, it’s just a gentle way
Of finding calm, protecting peace
My saving grace, a soft release
They say I’m different…set apart
Feel the rhythm in my heart
It beats for fairness, truth, and grace
In a world that lacks a warm embrace
I’m wiser than I look you know
I’m just like you, I learn, I grow
So before you judge and feel superior
I’m far more deep than my exterior
I’m a powerful voice, I’m black boy joy
Im proud of my truth, I’m an AUSome boy
Just open your heart and you will see
Your stares have no effect on me
I love my life, I am made whole
Feel my words and hear my soul.
